“You’re never going to be able to kill storytelling, because it’s built in the human plan. We come with it.”
—Margaret Atwood, author of The Handmaid’s Tale.
I grew up in an America that held sacred phrases like “dare to dream,” “anything is possible,” and “the sky’s the limit.” So why are so many left behind or even vilified? I have found that we can magnify the struggles of populations that deserve to be supported and heard through theatre and film. Afterall, this is where audiences sit safely in the dark, emotionally activated in response to the work. What a miraculous way for me to be of service to humanity, to cultivate empathy or even action through art.
I began as an actress working off-off-Broadway and quickly shifted into directing. The work took me to regional theatres all over the country from Manhattan, through Dallas, Chicago, Washington, San Francisco and eventually Los Angeles where I now reside. I expanded my practice as Producing Artistic Director and have been blessed to work with visionary designers and storytelling’s most sacred channels, actors. The path has always been a rich collaboration and exploration of imagination and craft.
One of the hallmarks of my theatre direction is developing imagery that creates emotional accessibility and visual impact. Now I’m interested in reaching a larger audience with original work. Although some aspects of theatre and film are wildly different, the commonality of story and imagery are at the heart of both genres.
My current screenplay HELL OUTTA DODGE is in service to foster care youth in the LGBTQI+ community. Being queer is rollercoaster enough. Add to it corrupt caregivers profiting off children, and this story, based on actual events must be told.
